Our Approach To Working With HeartMath®
Accumulated stress is often the underlying cause of common challenges, such as anxiety, anger, depression, lack of sleep, illness, and more. Activating coherence helps you prevent and relieve stress and anxiety while balancing your mental and emotional energy - which connects you with your higher creative potentials.
HeartMath helps you tap into the power and intelligence of your heart - your heart's intuition - which awakens you to the best version of yourself. It provides you with a unique combination of evidence-based techniques, coherence technology, and learning programs in order to reduce stress, improve sleep, restore energy, balance emotions, increase focus, and tap into your intuition.
What is HeartMath®? HeartMath® refers to a collection of techniques, research, and technology that brings together years of research on the connection between the heart and brain and the heart’s ability to help regulate our system.
The HeartMath® System uses analysis of heart rate variability (HRV), the measure of changes in the time intervals between heartbeats. There are several systems available that support HRV biofeedback, such as the Inner Balance sensor. The sensor is an electrocardiogram (ECG) that allows you to observe your heart’s changing rhythms in real time as well as the impact of skills and techniques to support optimal brain-heart-body harmony or alignment, also referred to as coherence.
How Does It Work? Although we usually think of our heart rate as a single number and a steady drumbeat, a healthy heart rhythm is actually complex and constantly changing. These changes are in response to changes in our physical and psychological state. Our heart works with the central nervous system and hormonal system to respond to perceived challenges to our stable state (homeostasis).
Many therapy approaches and traditional coping strategies focus on thinking, or a cognitive approach. This focus falls short for many people since it is missing a key part of the puzzle — the brain’s interaction with the other complex systems of the body, including our emotional centers. Research has shown that the neural connections from the heart to the brain are more numerous and stronger than those going the other way. Thus it is difficult to change our emotional experience through rational thought alone. HeartMath® uses this foundational knowledge to support the development of supportive and adaptive patterns of heart-brain communication.
Consistent use of the HeartMath® techniques allow you to gain greater control over your physiological response to stress and anxiety, increasing your resilience and ability to regulate emotions. The technology is most effective when paired with coaching or training by a Certified HeartMath Practitioner or integrated with ongoing psychotherapy.
Biofeedback is an additional dimension of a holistic wellness approach that provides tangible data on your progress in changing the stress and anxiety response. With support from your clinician and ongoing practice, you will see a reduction in your overall state of anxiety and increase in resilience.
