Our Approach to Working With Body Image

Body image is complex and how we see ourselves is influenced by a variety of personal experiences including trauma, societal and cultural beauty norms, marginalized identities, and diet culture. Embodiment is a significant part of our human experience and yet, for so many of us, it is painful and difficult to feel comfortable and safe in our own skin.

Symptoms of Poor Body Image Might Look Like:

· Obsessive and/or self-critical thoughts about one’s appearance

· Worrying about your body shape, appearance, and weight

· Feeling ashamed about the way you look or about certain parts of your body

· Engaging in dangerous behaviors to try and alter your bodies appearance

· Having difficulty accepting compliments about your body from others

· Your mood is significantly impacted by thoughts, emotions, and beliefs about your body

· Frequently engaging in body checking (i.e.: looking in the mirror often to check for flaws,

Ways That We Work With Body Image

We approach body image using a variety of therapeutic modalities such as CBT, DBT, ERP, and Narrative Therapy. We understand that we cannot address body image concerns without addressing the very real and oppressive belief systems that contribute to body-based shame and dissatisfaction. We use psychoeducation in conjunction with these therapies to address intersectionality and to help clients reimagine a world where all bodies can feel safe and accepted.
